Naughty Dog, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment America and publishers of titles such as Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, and the Crash Bandicoot franchise, are one of the most successful video game developers in the United States. The company had outgrown their old premises, and was looking to relocate to another space in Santa Monica’s Water Garden complex to house their growing gaming software firm.
The client wanted a space that reflected their culture; a twenty-something, mostly male group who liked a darker workspace, concrete floors, exposed ceilings and trays full of cables in their trademark colors of black, red and white. Workstations were provided in large open areas with few offices: this was so that the gaming designers could work in groups, promoting interaction and collaboration. The selected furniture system provided seated privacy in the corner spaces for concentration and focus, with lower panels throughout the rest of the open office spaces.
A lot of time employee time is spent on-site, so POLLACK designed a large lunchroom that allowed for congregating, sharing and the hosting of large groups with conferencing facilities off to the side. Garage doors were added between the conference rooms and the lunchroom, opening to accommodate larger, all-hands meeting and functions. Sound rooms were also added, as well as an informal theater filled with comfy sofas for press launches and investor viewings.
