Recology

San Francisco | 20,000 sf

POLLACK architecture was retained by Recology (formerly NorCal Waste Systems, Inc.) for their new 20,000 sf headquarters, at Fifty California Street. Recology, like POLLACK, is an employee-owned company; and is the largest ESOP in the solid waste industry, providing waste management services to more than 600,000 residential and 60,000 commercial customers.

As leaders in sustainability, Recology needed an interior architect that shared their beliefs. Sustainability was key to the project and POLLACK worked hard to realize the client’s cultural goal, incorporating Recology’s philosophy of ‘ecology’ and ‘recycling’ into their new space as well as an appreciation of the interrelationship between people and their environment.

Perhaps the most characteristic sustainable aspect of the project is the artwork, which was created by local artists using materials recovered from San Francisco’s waste stream. The 50 California Street location was chosen for the proximity to public transportation, and its ability to provide staff with daylight and views to the outdoors. Green initiatives included carpet containing 60% recycled content, recycled cork and linoleum flooring, coconut shell backslash material and recycled concrete counter tops. Low flow fixtures were utilized to save water and energy efficient lighting and control systems were also implemented.

POLLACK worked closely with Recology to achieve their cultural vision of green design, and ultimately attained LEED Gold certification from the USGBC
