El Camino Hospital, a brand new, innovative, state-of-the-art health care provider engaged POLLACK architecture to design numerous high-visibility spaces within their new hospital. POLLACK’s scope of work included a pharmacy, meditation room, gift shop, and Health Connection (a high-end holistic spa).
For the gift shop and Health Connection, POLLACK created sophisticated retail destinations that seamlessly integrate with the expansive lobby plaza. Our solution was to entice the customers into the shop by creating clean and visual corner storefronts. Rich and warm materials are used throughout as a natural extension of the lobby space, including stone and wood flooring, bamboo wall paneling, and wood slat ceiling.
For the meditation room, POLLACK created a non-specific religious room that allows for the observance of multiple faiths. This space is intimate enough for individual reflection as well as for family/group gathering and counseling. POLLACK fulfilled the chaplain’s request for a 'positive' space filled with light and symbolic gestures to water, earth and light. Various materials are selected to evoke the desired symbolic gestures. A patchwork of cable-hung glasses in natural textures floats and diffuses the full-height exterior glazing, allowing for natural daylight to wash the space without glare. A full-height waterless waterfall sculpture offers a reflective surface, symbolic to cleansing.
