Citadel Environmental is a building services firm with the mission of integrating their knowledge of the built environment with the fields of industrial hygiene, geology, and environmental sciences. Citadel retained POLLACK architecture to transform a neglected, light-industrial office space in a transitional neighborhood. The design team was challenged with turning a dreary, ugly, rabbit warren of offices into a brightly light, first-class sustainable office building. Citadel’s goal was to achieve the LEED for Commercial Interiors Platinum level.
The project features innovative sustainable design solutions that reduce operating costs, energy use and water consumption. The design utilizes glass to enlarge the space, with three perimeter offices and a conference room with dividers to create two rooms. Exposed ceilings and skylights show the beauty of the wood support along with the cinder block exterior walls. Wood from the exterior is utilized in the reception area, providing a lower ceiling to invite guests into the space.
This client, as experts in the environmental services industry, needed a space that practiced what they preach. Working closely with the General Contractor, POLLACK’s design team was able to reduce Citadels CO2 emissions by 13 metric tons per year, vastly reducing the client’s carbon footprint. The team’s commitment to thoroughly understanding Citadel’s needs made this project a resounding success – now Citadel are the first privately held LEED space in Glendale and only the 5th certified platinum space in the state of California.
